Mini Biography
Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born on July 23rd, 1989 to Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham. He began performing in small school productions as a young boy. Soon enough, he landed a role in David Copperfield (1999) (TV), as the young David Copperfield. A couple of years later, he landed a role as Mark Pendel in The Tailor of Panama (2001), the son of Harry and Louisa Pendel (Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis). Lee Curtis had indeed pointed out to Daniel's mother that he could be Harry Potter himself. Soon afterwards, Daniel was cast as Harry Potter by director, Chris Columbus in the film that hit theatres in November 16, 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). He was recognized worldwide after this film was released. Pleasing audiences and critics everywhere, filming on its sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), commenced shortly afterwards. He appeared again as Harry in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and then appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) directed by Mike Newell. Shortly afterwards, he finished filming _December Boys (2006)_ in Adelaide, Australia, Kangaroo Island, and Geelong, Australia which began on the 14th of November, 2005 and ended sometime in December. On January 27th, 2006, he attended the South Bank Awards Show to present the award for "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" to Billie Piper. Dan reprised his famous character once again for the next installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). In February 2007 he took on his first stage role in the West End play Equus to worldwide praise from fans and critics alike. He has finished filming the TV movie My Boy Jack (2007) (TV), which will air on 11 November 2007 in the UK.
Now being one of the world's most recognizable people, Daniel leads a somewhat normal life. He has made friends working on the Harry Potter films, which include his co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.

Personal Quotes
After being cast as Harry Potter: "I think I'm a tiny bit like Harry 'cos I'd like to have an owl. Yeah, that's the tiny bit, actually."
I don't know. People tell me I look mournful. They say, "Cheer up, Dan, it's not that bad!" Sometimes I just look into space, which freaks people out. If I was ever required to do anything other than look haunted, I could. I'm a happy person. Though I don't, like, dot my "I's" with hearts or anything - that would be too happy.
I'm not much of a cake person.
But I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think I'll do all of them - I'll probably get too spotty or too tall or I'll shrink or something.
"Absolutely. 100 percent." [on believing in magic]
I was in the bath at the time, and my dad came running in and said, 'Guess who they want to play Harry Potter!?' and I started to cry. It was probably the best moment of my life.
I'm not clumsy, I'm just accident prone.
Upon seeing the movie: "I'm a bit nervous about whether people will like it, but I've seen it, and I'm sure they will. It's really good - it's quite scary, it's quite emotional. Even I cried and I don't cry easily! I cried at the end credits when my name came up, and I was, like, Oh my God! I can't believe that's my name! I've met so many people since we started filming and it's been wonderful. I've progressed so far and changed so much since the beginning. It's been like a real journey."
On considering himself as a heartthrob: "Personally I can't see it, but if other people can, fine. Cool!"
I would consider doing any part as long as the script is good and the film has an interesting director.
"I like them, but it's hard to concentrate when the bats fly about, and they pee while they fly." [about the bats on the set]
I've never been one of the cool people at school, but then again, I don't get the people who are cool. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they don't interest me.
"Too many little numbers on one page!" - about math
Stage is much more intimidating than going before the cameras, because you can really screw up, and can't do a retake.
When I go back to school everyone asks a lot of questions. Then, after about a week, when I've answered everything, we get back to normal.
It's too far down the road to decide about a fifth movie. I'm still the same age Harry is, and I haven't actually grown that much.
Fans are really important for me. And if they take pains to write me, it's the minimum that I answer myself.
I think I'm highly normal. I'm attending school after acting, I'm going out with friends, going to the cinema - I'm just doing everything a normal teenager does. People think I can't leave the house without being in a crowd of fans - but that's not true. I'm able to do more things than people might think.
I'm thrilled of the acceptance I get abroad. The people are so hearty, warm and grateful and I feel privileged having seen so many countries and some of the greatest monuments.
When I get into trouble at school I'd like to take an invisibility cloak, drape it over me and sneak out the door. Or I'd like to have a 3-headed-dog because then no one would argue with me.
I played a trick on the make-up department where I put a fake blood capsule in my mouth, pretended to trip on the stairs and let the blood come out of my mouth. They really fell for it, then they chased after me with a water pistol.
Everyone on the set has a mobile phone, and I found by pushing a few buttons, they could be programmed into different languages. I fixed Robbie's (Coltrane) to speak in Turkish.
I don't understand girls, but I'm slowly learning.
[on saying that he'll do all of the Harry Potter movies] "Ultimately it comes down to whether we're still enjoying it. If we are then I think we would be sort of stupid not to do them. As long as I'm doing other stuff around the same time, I think it'll be fine. Also, I sort of try to read the books when they come out impartially and not make up my mind, but the fact is when I was reading the sixth, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, there were bits in there where I was going, 'God, I would love to do that because it's so good.'"
(on whether he is religious) "I'm not a religious person. My mom was of Jewish blood and my dad was Protestant... I'm very interested in religion as something to study, but I'm not a religious person in the slightest."
I didn't look at the nudity and go, oh great. But it's the same as doing a role with an accent or a particular affectation. You look at the character first. Lots of the actors that I've admired have at one stage or another taken their kit off. It's a rite of passage. That iconic scene is the physical and emotional climax of the play. So if I do that with pants on, it would be crap.
I feel OK about my body. Not totally, of course, no one my age does ... but I've gone to the gym to make sure. And many of the actors I admire, like Gary Oldman, have gone naked.
People will always remember Harry, but I think if I work hard enough other characters will stick in their minds as well.
[About the "Equus" paparazzi]: They were outside the theatre every single night, but we came up with a cunning ruse. I would wear the same outfit every time - a different T-shirt underneath, but I'd wear the same jacket and zip it up so they couldn't see what I was wearing underneath, and the same hat. So they could take pictures for six months, but it would look like the same day, so they (photos) became unpublishable. Which was hilarious, because there's nothing better than seeing paparazzi getting really frustrated.
What everybody would love to see is me having ditched school and then just going wild. That's what I'm determined not to give them.
It's not so much that they don't want me to grow up. It's that they're annoyed that I'm growing up adjusted. They'd much rather I was growing up and going wild and crashing cars.

Radcliffe Plans "Raucous" 21st Birthday
14 September 2007 (WENN)
Daniel Radcliffe regrets not going wild when he turned 18 - vowing to make sure his 21st birthday will be a "a more raucous affair." The Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix actor's 18th birthday in July was a low-key celebration - he spent the day watching the cricket. But admits his next milestone birthday will be wild. The star told British radio station Heart: "I'm certain my 21st will be a more raucous affair than my 18th, I hope so anyway, why not? I'm not going to go off the rails though. I'm just going to keep on doing what I'm doing and won't get embroiled in any of that."
Radcliffe Set for Broadway?
7 September 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has confirmed he'll be stripping for theatre audiences in New York after signing on to star in the London transfer of Peter Shaffer's controversial play Equus. The teenager wowed West End audiences and critics with the role earlier this year, and now he'll join co-star Richard Griffiths when the production opens on Broadway. Although dates, details and venues have yet to be announced, Radcliffe admits he hopes to be on Broadway towards the end of 2008. He tells MTV News, "In all probability, if everything goes according to plan, it would definitely be me and Richard Griffiths and however many other cast members the unions will allow." The play, which featured Radcliffe completely naked in one brief scene, played to nearly sold-out audiences at London's Gielgud Theatre from February 24 to June 9.
Potter and Spider-Man Up for U.K. National Movie Awards
21 August 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix and Spider-Man 3 have been nominated for a host of prizes at Britain's inaugural National Movie Awards. U.K. TV network ITV is launching the new awards show following the success of their National Television Awards. Both events invite the public to vote for winners. Keira Knightley (Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End), Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man 3), Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Megan Fox (Transformers), Eva Green and Dame Judi Dench (Casino Royale) are up for the Best Actress at the September 28 London ceremony. Bruce Willis (Live Free Or Die Hard), Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), Shia LeBoeuf (Transformers), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man 3), Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom (Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End), Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) are fighting for the Best Actor trophy. Meanwhile Flushed Away, Happy Feet, Shrek The Third and The Simpsons Movie have been nominated for Best Animation.
Radcliffe Shuns Hollywood
13 July 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix star Daniel Radcliffe is reluctant to shoot movies abroad because he gets so homesick. The 17-year-old refuses to follow in the footsteps of actors Catherine Zeta-Jones and Pierce Brosnan who have moved stateside, because he prefers life in London. He tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "I don't think I could ever live anywhere but London, to be honest. I've lived there all my life. And I mean, hey, you know, I could be saying this now and in 20 years I will have moved out here. but for now and the immediate future, I can't - I can't really see myself living anywhere else but England." Radcliffe also reveal his parents prefer him to work in Britain and were upset when he traveled to Los Angeles to film the first installment of the boy wizard franchise. He says, "I signed on for, I think, all of the films and they were all to be done in Los Angeles and my mum and dad were just like 'Well, we don't really want that to happen, because it would be too big a disruption of his life'. But then it got changed to just two films and signing, and filming, in England."
Radcliffe Enjoyed Irritating Paparazzi
11 July 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix star Daniel Radcliffe enjoyed annoying the paparazzi during his recent stint on the London stage - for six months he deliberately wore the same clothes when leaving the theatre so photographs would be worthless. The 17-year-old was greeted by photographers each night outside the Gielgud Theatre during his stint in controversial West End play Equus, where the teenage actor disrobed onstage every night. Radcliffe quickly realized newspaper and magazine editors wouldn't publish photos of him wearing the same outfit night after night, because it would look like the pictures were taken on the same day. He says, "They (the paparazzi) were outside the theatre every single night, but we came up with a cunning ruse. I would wear the same outfit every time - a different T-shirt underneath, but I'd wear the same jacket and zip it up so they couldn't see what I was wearing underneath, and the same hat. So they could take pictures for six months, but it would look like the same day, so they (photos) became unpublishable. Which was hilarious, because there's nothing better than seeing paparazzi getting really frustrated."
Radcliffe Still Star-Struck by Rowling
5 July 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is still star-struck when he meets J.K. Rowling, the author of the fantasy series. Despite having played Rowling's boy wizard creation on screen for the past six years - he confesses he is overwhelmed by the author's presence. Speaking at the U.K. premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Radcliffe says," I still get star-struck. When you're around her, you sort of sit there thinking, you know, I'll just be very professional about this, we're work colleagues now, but inside I'm just thinking, 'Oh my god, she's written the book!'"
Radcliffe Becomes Youngest Waxwork
3 July 2007 (WENN)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix actor Daniel Radcliffe became the youngest ever star to be immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds on Monday. The 17-year-old, who celebrates his landmark 18th birthday later this month, joins a host of celebrities at the famous London landmark - and Ben Lovett, a spokesman for the museum, insists that regardless of age, the young star deserves to be waxed up. Lovett claims Radcliffe's recent naked turn onstage in controversial London play Equus gave the actor a celebrity edge he never had before. He says, "With his 18th birthday around the corner and stage roles like Equus under his belt, Daniel has become a young British acting force to be reckoned with. It's been great for the studio's sculptors to recreate someone who we've all watched growing up on the big screen."
Whitaker, Grant and Knightley To Perform on 'American Idol'
24 April 2007 (WENN)
Actors Forest Whitaker, Hugh Grant and Keira Knightley have signed up to perform on a special charity edition of hit TV talent show, American Idol. They will be joined by Daniel Radcliffe, Helena Bonham Carter and Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher on American Idol Gives Back, a one-off program to raise money for children in Africa and those whose lives were severely affected by 2005's Hurricane Katrina. Some celebrities will take to the stage alongside pop singers such as Gwen Stefani and Pink, while others will use their popularity to encourage viewers to donate funds to the charities. A source says, "It's great to have such a strong array of A-list stars. We are getting a chance to expose a young audience to global issues." The show will be broadcast live later this week.
Warner Bros. Confirms Watson Won't Quit
26 March 2007 (WENN)
Actress Emma Watson has ended speculation about her future as Harry Potter's pal Hermione Granger by confirming to movie executives she'll be by the boy wizard's side for all seven films. Fans were left fretting last week when Watson's co-star Rupert Grint suggested, in a British newspaper article, that his pal might not play a part in all seven planned films. But now Warner Brothers bosses have confirmed the actress has no plans to quit the film franchise. In a statement released on Friday, Warner production president Jeff Robinov said, "We are thrilled and proud that Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert and Emma have chosen to complete the arc of their characters in the final two films." The franchise's fifth movie, Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix will be released this summer - just as author J.K. Rowling's seventh and final Potter book, Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, hits stores. The sixth Potter film, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince is scheduled to hit cinemas next summer.
Radcliffe Signs On for Final Two 'Potter' Films
4 March 2007 (WENN)
British actor Daniel Radcliffe's representative has confirmed he has signed on to star in the final two films in the Harry Potter series. The 17-year-old, who has won rave reviews for his performance in the provocative play Equus, will start filming again in September. The then-unknown actor shot to fame in 2001 when he appeared as the boy wizard in the first Harry Potter film. The hit franchise, which continues with the fifth installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, later this year has grossed $3.5 billion globally at the box office. Rowling recently announced that the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be published on July 21, but no film start date has been officially set.
Potter Star Wins Praise In Naked Role
28 February 2007 (StudioBriefing)
In a calculated effort to escape typecasting, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has debuted in a revival of Peter Shaffer's Equus in London, a role that calls for him to appear on stage naked, simulate sex, and smoke. In an interview with the Associated Press, Radcliffe said that he had taken the role in order "to shake up people's perception of me." The wire service commented: "On those grounds, the play is already a success." Parents, religious and anti-smoking groups in the U.K. have expressed outrage over Radcliffe's decision. Reviews of the play itself were mixed, with many critics calling it dated. But most critics gave Radcliffe's performance high marks. Charles Spencer, in today's (Wednesday) Daily Telegraph, remarked that the young actor "brilliantly succeeds in throwing off the mantle of Harry Potter, announcing himself as a thrilling stage actor of unexpected range and depth." Wrote Michael Billington in The Guardian: "Forget all the prurient press speculation about Harry Potter's private parts. ... The revelation in this revival is that Daniel Radcliffe really can act."
Radcliffe Told To Only Sign 'Equus' Merchandise
28 February 2007 (WENN)
Actor Daniel Radcliffe has been ordered to only autograph items related to the London play he is currently appearing in - and not Harry Potter merchandise. The 17-year-old is starring in a revival of controversial play Equus, in which he makes his nude debut, and is besieged by hundreds of Potter fans each night outside the Gielgud Theatre. But play producer David Pugh says, "I have told him that he can meet his fans at the door but only sign Equus stuff. We have had hundreds of people at the stage door every night and he is very good, he always meets them. He has even taken to signing hundreds of cards before the performance and handing them out."
Radcliffe's Co-Star Defends Nude Scene
22 February 2007 (WENN)
British actress Joanna Christie has defended Equus co-star Daniel Radcliffe for appearing nude on the London stage, insisting the play is about much more than him stripping off. The Harry Potter star, 17, defended his decision to appear naked in a revival of Peter Shaffer's 1973 play earlier this month, after the promotional pictures for the show caused controversy among parents of young fans of the boy wizard. But 24-year-old Christie is amazed by the amount of press attention Radcliffe has attracted, and urges critics to look beyond the raunchy scenes to see the meaning of the play itself. She says, "I can't believe there are people saying he's a bad role model for children. He's an actor playing a part, and in the story he happens to have a relationship with a girl. The play is on school syllabuses. It's an amazingly interesting, complex story. It's not about nudity or sex. It's about a lot of very complex issues. When we do (the nude scene) in the context of the play it's really beautiful and natural. I expected some publicity because of Daniel but not stories and photos everywhere."
Ah, Harry, How You've Grown!
31 January 2007 (StudioBriefing)
A series of publicity photos for the revival of the play Equus showing 17-year-old Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe nude has angered parents in England, where the play is to be performed. In several of the photos, Radcliffe is seen with co-star Joanna Christie, who also appears topless. They also appear nude in several scenes in the play. The London Daily Mail quoted from letters written to Radcliffe's fan sites. "We as parents feel Daniel should not appear nude. Our nine-year-old son looks up to him as a role model. We are very disappointed and will avoid the future movies he makes," one parent wrote. (His younger fans generally expressed opposite opinions.) A spokeswoman for Radcliffe said, "Daniel does not want to step away from Harry Potter but he does want to show he is a rounded actor capable of very different and diverse roles."
Raunchy Radcliffe Pictures Upset Parents
31 January 2007 (WENN)
Naked pictures of Daniel Radcliffe to promote a new play are causing controversy among fans of the Harry Potter movies. The young star peels off his top half and cuddles up with a topless co-star in the promotional snaps for his London West End run in Equus. The pictures have already become popular among young female fans of the 17-year-old - most famous for his role in the boy wizard franchise. But parents are up in arms and are bombarding Harry Potter fansites with emails. One reads, "We as parents feel Daniel should not appear nude. Our nine-year-old son looks up to him as a role model. We are very disappointed and will avoid the future movies he makes." Radcliffe's spokesperson Vanessa Davies tells British newspaper the Daily Mail, "Daniel does not want to step away from Harry Potter but he does want to show he is a rounded actor capable of very different roles. He has tremendous support from Harry Potter fans." The play, written by Peter Shaffer, opens in London on February 27.
'Order of the Phoenix' Rising
21 November 2006 (StudioBriefing)
Warner Bros.' marketing/publicity campaign for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was officially launched Monday with the release of a still photo showing Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, experiencing his first kiss with Cho Chang, played by Katie Leung. A trailer for the film, due to open on July 13, appeared in theaters showing Warner's Happy Feet, then was set to go online on Monday.
Potter Stars' Kissing Marathon
23 August 2006 (WENN)
Harry Potter lovebirds Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung had to lock lips a staggering thirty times on the set of the latest movie - just to perfect one kiss. The young stars, who play the boy wizard and his love interest Cho Chang in upcoming installment Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, share their first love scene in the film but found screen smooching hard to master. Radcliffe, 17, says, "We probably got it on the thirtieth take. My god, it was fun. Me and Katie - we were awkward and nervous at first but once we got it, it was fine." Leung comments of her co-star's technique: "Daniel is a good kisser, I really enjoyed it. He's energetic and makes you feel relaxed."
Radcliffe To Bare All in Theatrical Debut
1 August 2006 (WENN)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire star Daniel Radcliffe will bare all onstage in his West End, London debut. The teenager and his Potter co-star Richard Griffiths have been confirmed as the stars of the revival of Peter Shaffer's controversial play Equus. Radcliffe will play a disturbed youth obsessed with blinding horses in the production and his publicist Vanessa Davies confirms he will strip for the role. She says, "This is an extraordinary play and, yes, there is a scene of nudity in it, but that's not what the play is about." Griffiths, who plays Harry Potter's villainous Uncle Vernon in the fantasy films, has been confirmed to play a psychiatrist in the play, which will open in March.
'Wedding Crashers' and 'Virgin' Land Five MTV Nominations
25 April 2006 (WENN)
Zany comedies Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin have topped this year's MTV Movie Awards nominations with five gongs apiece. The two films will compete with King Kong, Sin City and Batman Begins for the Best Movie Prize, while Virgin's Steve Carell will fight for the Best Performance honor with Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams and Terrence Howard. Batman Begins' Christian Bale, Jessica Alba (Sin City), Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire), Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Evolution) and Ewan McGregor (Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith) will fight it out for the Best Hero prize while the Best Villains race is between Harry Potter bad guy Ralph Fiennes, Darth Vader Hayden Christensen and Batman foe Cillian Murphy, among others. In other categories, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo star Rob Schneider will compete with Beyonce Knowles (The Pink Panther), Alba, and Jessica Simpson (Dukes Of Hazzard) for the Sexiest Performance honor. And parents-to-be Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are favorites to claim the Best Fight for their rumble in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The 2006 MTV Movie Awards will air on June 8.
Radcliffe Portrait Sets National Portrait Gallery Record
13 April 2006 (WENN)
Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has become the youngest non-royal to have an individual portrait displayed in London's prestigious National Portrait Gallery. Radcliffe, 16, was only 14 years old when he posed for artist Stuart Pearson Wright during a break from filming the movies based on JK Rowling's best-selling books. He says, "I love it. Until recently, I'd seen a peek of it in the catalogue, but not actually seen the real thing. It was strange seeing myself as I was two years ago, not as I am now. If you look at each individual part of my face they look exactly like part of my face. Together it's surreal." The picture of Radcliffe will hang alongside nine other paintings by Wright, which include portraits of ER star Parminder Nagra, Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman.
'King Kong' Named Best Movie of 2005
14 March 2006 (WENN)
Gorilla remake King Kong has been named the Best Film of 2005, picking up top prize at last night's Empire Magazine's film awards. Despite being largely shunned at the Academy Awards earlier this month, the giant monkey movie beat Oscar-winner Crash to the accolade, as voted by the British public. But the racial drama did not go totally unrecognized, with star Thandie Newton hailed as Best Actress. Johnny Depp's inspired performance in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory earned him the male equivalent. Elsewhere, the cast of the Harry Potter movies were honored for their Outstanding Contribution to the British film industry. The movie franchise, worth more than $3.4 billion worldwide, was represented by teen star Daniel Radcliffe, who picked up the award for his role as the boy wizard. Movie legend Tony Curtis flew all the way from Los Angeles to personally accept a Lifetime Achievement Award - the first major award of his career. He was recognized for his roles in hit films including Some Like It Hot, Spartacus and The Defiant Ones. Sir Roger Moore, his co-star in cult TV series The Persuaders, was on hand to present the prize. The ceremony was held in the Hilton London Metropole, with British comedian Bill Bailey hosting.
Potter Actor Now Richest Teenager in Britain
21 November 2005 (StudioBriefing)
The London Sunday Times has reported that 16-year-old Daniel Radcliffe has signed a deal worth at least $14 million to play Harry Potter once again in the forthcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the series. (It noted that he received $250,000 to make the first Potter film.) The newspaper observed that the deal makes Radcliffe the richest teenager in Britain. In an interview with the newspaper, Radcliffe said, "I don't actually know how much I am worth at this point. In a way, I think that's right. It's not something that affects the way I think about things." The Times observed that Gilmore Jacobs, a firm set up by Radcliffe's parents to manage his business affairs, has earned $17 million from the first three films. Philip Beresford, compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, said: "I've never seen such profitable accounts for someone so young. I would not be surprised if he enters adulthood with [$34 million] in the bank, with all his taxes paid. He has left his teenage rivals struggling in the slipstream of his broomstick."
Radcliffe Is Britain's Wealthiest Teenager
21 November 2005 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has been calculated Britain's richest teenager. Radcliffe, who shot to stardom at the age of 11 after starring in JK Rowling's first magical wizard movie Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, is now 16 and richer than fellow teenagers Charlotte Church and Joss Stone. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire director Mike Newell is relieved Radcliffe and co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have not been carried away by their wealth. He says, "They all know exactly what they're worth but they have not become impossible. My worst fear is that they would have realized that they are absolutely the stars." Radcliffe has just signed a $14.4 million deal to make the fifth movie in the series - Harry Potter The Order Of The Phoenix.
Movie Reviews: 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'
17 November 2005 (StudioBriefing)
No doubt about it, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is the best Harry Potter movie yet, most of the major critics seem to agree. The film, which opens in most cities at midnight tonight, is being ecstatically praised, even by critics who expressed reservations about the three earlier Potter flicks. One of the reasons may be that Harry has now crossed over into puberty (although the character is 14, Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays him, is 16), and is being allowed more intense experiences, both in terms of magic and romance. (Although the previous films were rated PG, the new one is rated PG-13.) Jami Bernard in the New York Daily News calls it "the darkest, most thrilling entry yet in the movie franchise." To Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the new movie "is the most fun and the most fraught with conflict." Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times concludes: "It's taken them long enough, but the movies have finally gotten Harry Potter right. Despite the reported $2.7 billion earned by the series' three previous attempts, it's not until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire that a film has successfully recreated the sense of stirring magical adventure and engaged, edge-of-your-seat excitement that has made the books such an international phenomenon." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times observes, "The film is more violent, less cute than the others, but the action is not the mindless destruction of a video game; it has purpose, shape and style." Much of the credit for the film's artistic success, the critics say, goes to director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco). Eleanor Ringel Gillespie in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes that Newell "is the first Brit to direct a Potter picture. Perhaps that's why he 'gets' the books better than his predecessors. He's more comfortable with the boarding-school setting -- the rush between classes, the heart-to-hearts in hidden rooms, the petty estrangements and the unnecessary hurts."
Several critics have high praise for the older actors in the cast. Manohla Dargis in the New York Times particularly singles out Ralph Fiennes, writing: "For years, the movies have tried to transform this delicate beauty into a heartthrob, but as Schindler's List proved, Mr. Fiennes is an actor for whom a walk on the darker side is not just a pleasure, but liberation. His Voldemort may be the greatest screen performance ever delivered without the benefit of a nose; certainly it's a performance of sublime villainy." Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News suggests that parents ought not to be concerned about that PG-13 ratings. "The film follows in the fantasy tradition of stretching perceptions of the possible, and it does so in a richly realized and recognizably human universe. Sometimes, it's better to be scared than bored," he writes. Ty Burr in the Boston Globe agrees, noting that the movie "is oddly less scary in some ways than last year's Prisoner of Azkaban -- less predicated on computer-generated ghoulies and funhouse shocks. The dread here cuts deeper, though. When we hear the wail of a grieving father toward the end of the movie, it's the first genuinely human moment in a Harry Potter film, and it is awful." A handful of critics are less than enthusiastic about the movie, however. "Count me among those just mild about Harry," writes Kyle Smith in the New York Post. "The all-out cuteness of the Hogwartsians, with their Pufnstufs and Whiffenpoofs, is fine for people of developing minds, but the story so often stops its forward motion to take us on long detours into the land of CGI effects that it amounts to a $150 million magic show." An equally lukewarm review comes from Claudia Puig in USA Today, who remarks: "It's hard to beat the last movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and this film is not better, but it has much to recommend it."
Radcliffe: "I Will Always Be Potter"
16 November 2005 (WENN)
Daniel Radcliffe has dismissed fears continuing as movie wizard Harry Potter will typecast him - insisting he will star in all seven films. The 16-year-old, who has played the wizard since the first movie in 2001, is enjoying himself too much to leave the hit franchise, but intends to prove his versatility in a series of side projects. He says, "Ultimately it comes down to whether we're still enjoying it.
Radcliffe's Parents Move Location of Fifth Potter Film
19 June 2005 (WENN)
The filming of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix is returning to its original British location after the parents of Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe voiced safety fears over filming in the Czech Republic. The fifth big screen installment appeared destined to have a Czech location after Warner Bros executives announced earlier this year they were dismantling movie sets at Leavesden studios in Hertfordshire, and rebuilding them in Prague to save production costs. But Daniel's parents, Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham, told producers they were concerned at letting their son - who turns 15 next month - spending long periods of time in a city increasingly famous for its wild nightlife and growing sex industry. As a result the most of the filming will now take place at the original Leavesden studios. A crewmember says, "Some of it is going to happen in Prague but we have been told that most of the filming is going to happen here. It's because of Daniel's parents, and you can see their point. Prague is not the place for a 15-year-old boy to spend several months in." The fourth movie, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, hits cinemas this November .
Radcliffe Refuses To Watch His Potter Debut
15 December 2004 (WENN)
Teenage actor Daniel Radcliffe refuses to watch his movie debut in 2001's Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone because he's embarrassed by how immature he seems in it. The 15-year-old star - who plays the boy wizard - accidentally caught a glimpse of himself in the 2001 movie while changing TV channels, but immediately turned it off because he hated the sound of his voice. He explains, "I haven't seen the first one in a few years. I don't want to watch it. I won't go back while I'm doing the fourth one. Although having said that, I was flicking through the channels one day and I saw a bit of it on TV and I genuinely thought there was something wrong with the sound because my voice was too high and I seemed so young. I might watch it one day for fun - although I'm not sure how much fun it would be because I'm really self-critical."
Radcliffe's Aquatic Christmas Cards
29 November 2004 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe ordered the movie sequel's cast and crew to pose for photos 20 feet under water - for a bizarre Christmas card The 15-year-old actor - who plays the boy wizard - had finished shooting a mermaid scene for his latest movie Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire and decided to take advantage of the specially constructed tank, by staging an aquatic photo shoot and asking computer experts to add reindeer antlers and snow for his festive cards. Radcliffe explains on his website DanRadcliffe.co.uk, "It was taken 20 feet down in a tank specially constructed at Leavesden Studios in Watford, England. Every person you see helped me through this very demanding sequence."
Fiennes Is Voldemort
6 August 2004 (WENN)
Oscar-nominated Ralph Fiennes has won the highly sought-after role as Harry Potter's nemesis Lord Voldemort in the fourth film in the blockbuster series. The Schindler's List actor will play the evil wizard - who has never been seen before, but whose spirit is visible in the first three movies - in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. The film, directed by Four Weddings And A Funeral's Mike Newell, sees the return of Daniel Radcliffe as Potter, alongside mainstays Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire is set to be released in November 2005.
Potter Teen Star for War Role?
6 July 2004 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has been tipped to star in the adaptation of an acclaimed book about the second world war - after the project was hit with yet another delay. Author Sebastian Faulks' World War I novel Birdsong has been trying to get his 1994 story on the big screen for years, and is sick of constant delays. Faulks says, "The film has been supposed to be happening for ten years now with the film company Working Title who have the rights. All the original actors are now too old - Ralph Fiennes and before him Daniel Day-Lewis. More recently they were talking about Orlando Bloom or Jake Gyllenhaal, but it's apparently not them either. By the time it gets made, the star of Harry Potter could end up being old enough to do it - is he a good actor?"

The new film is directed by Alfonso Cuaron and features returning stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
Radcliffe Passes Church, Approaches Prince's Wealth
30 March 2004 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has replaced singer Charlotte Church as Britain's second richest teenager - and the actor is predicted to soon become the richest. Currently Prince Harry is the country's richest teenager, but Radcliffe is predicted to eclipse the royal's reported $25 million fortune as his salary for the series of Potter films rises which each installment. A movie insider says, "The project would lose too much credibility if they changed any of the lead actors now so in effect Dan can name his price. He'll be the richest teenager in the UK and one of the richest in the world by the time its all done."
A 16-Year-Old Harry Potter?
18 June 2003 (StudioBriefing)
Although analysts have suggested that the three young stars of the Harry Potter movies are quickly outgrowing their characters, the Reuter News Agency on Tuesday, citing an industry source familiar with the matter, reported that they will likely return for the fourth Potter film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, due to be released in November 2005. By that time, Daniel Radcliffe, who portrays Harry Potter, will be 16 years old. Reuters quoted Seth Siegel, founder of The Beanstalk licensing and marketing consultancy group, as warning that if the stars are not replaced by younger actors, "licensing will fade away." Wendi Green, an agent for child actors with Abrams Artists Agency, told the wire service, "If [they] are too old, kids can't relate to it."
Daniel Radcliffe Stays On As Potter
16 June 2003 (WENN)
Teen actor Daniel Radcliffe's mother has dismissed as "rubbish" rumors that her son will not be appearing in another Harry Potter film. Marcia Gresham leapt to the defense of her 13-year-old, following persistent talk of his poor academic performance. And the protective mom denies Daniel is facing a choice between schoolwork and his role as the young wizard. She says, "It is all rubbish." Movie insiders confirm Daniel is contracted to star in the next movie based on JK Rowling's books. A source says, "Daniel will be in the fourth film, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. There is not a grain of truth in reports that his schoolwork has been suffering. He has had the best results ever. His schoolwork has never been better - he is a very hardworking young man."
'Harry Potter IV' May Be Split in Two
10 April 2003 (WENN)
The makers of the massively successfully Harry Potter series of films are considering splitting the fourth novel into two separate films. The producer of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire has revealed that pre-production is taking so long that the book may be made into two separate movies. David Heyman was speaking at the DVD launch of the second Potter film The Chamber Of Secrets. He says, "We started work on the script last Monday. We're going to shoot it as one and see how it ends up. If it's too long then we'll make it into two." The young cast of the film, including Daniel Radcliffe as Potter, were all at the launch party of what may become one of the biggest selling DVDs of all time. They all say they "cannot wait" to read JK Rowling's fifth book, The Order Of The Phoenix, out in June.
Harry Potter and the Challenge of the Next Sequel
18 November 2002 (StudioBriefing)
Warner Bros. is facing a host of staggering problems as it prepares to shoot Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment of the Harry Potter movies, the Los Angeles Times observed today (Monday). Among them: A one-year delay to allow star Daniel Radcliffe to start a prestigious private school in England; the installation of Alfonso Cuarón as director, taking over from Chris Columbus [Producer Art Linson in his tell-all Hollywood book What Just Happened, describes the frequent conflicts that occurred between Cuarón and screenwriter Mitch Glazer on the set of 1998's Great Expectations]; rendering J.K. Rowling's 734-page third book as a screenplay; the aging of the teenage stars; and the need to find another actor to play Professor Albus Dumbledore, portrayed in the first two installments by the late Richard Harris. Warner Bros. President Alan Horn told the Times that mounting the third film is turning out to be "a Herculean task."
'Secrets' Revealed in London
4 November 2002 (StudioBriefing)
Daniel Radcliffe, the young star of the Harry Potter movies, was speaking of his reception at the London premiere of the latest film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets -- not the film itself -- when he told a reporter Sunday that "it is really strange, but very exciting." However, initial reviews have reached that conclusion about the movie. Lizzie Rusbridger writes in today's Guardian newspaper. "The magic of Harry Potter is as potent as ever in film. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is darker, funnier and finer than its forerunner." John Walsh writes a few critical comments about the outsized special effects ("sturm und drang") and "darker" plot, then interrupts himself with: "But to hell with the story. Far more entertaining is the slew of new characters joining the party." Young members of the audience exiting the theater appeared wildly enthusiastic, most of them pronouncing the film more exciting than the original. The film opens in general release in both the U.S. and U.K. on Nov. 15.
Meet a Star Who Doesn't Want to Know What He's Worth
25 October 2002 (StudioBriefing)
Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the lead role in the Harry Potter movies, says he has no idea how much he has earned -- and will earn -- from them. In an interview with the London Daily Telegraph, the 13-year-old actor remarked, "I don't know how much money I have, and I don't need to know, because I'm only a kid." Co-star Emma Watson, who is 12, added: "My parents decided not to tell me what I am earning because it is easier that way." Although director Chris Columbus indicated earlier in the week that he believes the three actors will be replaced after completing the third Potter film, The Prisoner of Azkaban, next year, Radcliffe told the Telegraph: "Harry actually grows in the books, and there's no reason why I can't grow with Harry, or why Emma can't grow with Hermione [Granger, her character] or Rupert with Ron [Weasley, his character]."
Another Harry Potter Actor in 2004?
23 October 2002 (StudioBriefing)
Another company of young actors is expected to take over the principal roles in the Harry Potter film franchise beginning in 2004 for the fourth movie, Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Potter movies, predicted Tuesday. Noting that the current stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will all by teenagers next year, Columbus told Reuters: "If I were a betting man, I'd say they'll probably stop after three [Potter movies]." He himself has decided to stop after two, he said, because he was worn out and wanted to spend more time with his family.
Radcliffe Growing Out Of Potter Role - Literally
5 September 2002 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has resigned himself to growing out of the child wizard movie role - literally. The 13-year-old actor has finished filming the second installment of the adaptation of author J.K> Rowling's massively successful seven strong children's book series, but his voice has already broken and he's just had a growth spurt. He says, "In a couple of years, I might have changes so much that I look wrong for the part - even though Harry grows with the books. So I'm enjoying the fame while I can - after all, I might do these films and then disappear or something might go horribly wrong and I'll never act again."
Potter Mania Hits the Web
12 June 2002 (WENN)
Harry Potter fans are freezing up the Internet as they try to download sneak images from the new film. The second installment of the wizard tale, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will not bow until later this year, but exclusive photos have been posted on America Online, causing a surge in downloads. The movie stills show Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, in the Chamber of Secrets, along with new characters including Lucius Malfoy (British actor Jason Isaacs), the father of Potter's nemesis Draco, and Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, played by Kenneth Branagh. The first film scored a huge hit at the box office and studio bosses are fueling more Potter fever when they release the full length movie trailer this Friday with Scooby-Doo.
Harry Potter's Latest Enemy: Cooties
12 February 2002 (WENN)
Harry Potter is swapping his magic potions for nit lotion after an outbreak of headlice among the young cast on the set of the sequel. Nurses have been drafted in to examine the heads of the young actors, who play pupils of the fictional Hogwarts School in Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets. And even the film's main star Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the schoolboy wizard, will not escape the rigorous search by nurses for the itchy bugs. One crew member says, "All the kids are given a thorough head examination every day while they are in make-up before any filming can go ahead. The producers wish Harry could perform some real wizardry on this one. But in the absence of any magic, bosses were forced to put their heads together and decide on some rigorous daily checks. If and when problems occur they are dealt with then and there so they don't get out of hand." A Warner Brothers spokesman says, "The health and safety of children involved on any production is of paramount importance."
Harry Potter Star "Hottest Child Actor Since Culkin"
17 January 2002 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is a young man in demand - he's now "the hottest child star since Macaulay Culkin". The 12-year-old plays the boy wizard in the series of fantasy films, the first of which, last year's Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, proved phenomenally successfully - and is now being chased to star in a number of high-profile projects. A movie source told website Ananova, "Casting directors and producers are falling over themselves to get Daniel's name on the dotted line. He is the hottest child star since Macaulay Culkin arrived on the scene."
Daniel Radcliffe Wins First Award
6 December 2001 (WENN)
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has won his first Hollywood award. Radcliffe won the Male Youth Discovery of the Year Award from the Hollywood Women's Press Club. But he wasn't able to pick up his award in person as he's filming Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, the second in the Harry Potter series. Other winners of this year's Golden Apple Awards, as they're known, include Kevin Spacey and Drew Barrymore, who received Star of the Year honors.
Harry Haircut All The Rage
19 November 2001 (WENN)
Harry Potter mania is overtaking America before the movie's even been released - with hoards of kids hitting the hairdressers demanding a "shaggy Harry". Young Potter fans have already asked opticians to make their glasses in the shape of the young wizard's specs. And now Harry's messy haircut is taking off as a new trend. Keshia Freeman from the Hair Cuttery, the hairdressing chain which reported the demand for a Harry advises young hopefuls to "miss a couple of haircuts" to grow out the trendy spiked on top, clippered on the side hairstyle most young boys currently have.
Online Ticket Sales For Potter Soar
15 November 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Even before it opens, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has already sold $3 million of tickets online and is likely to sell an additional $3 million by the time theater box offices open on Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday). "This movie is helping raise awareness of online movie ticketing," said Art Levitt, CEO of the Fandango.com ticket-selling outfit, which allows online customers to print out their tickets for certain theaters. Several analysts interviewed by the Times observed that online ticket buying for movies has shown slow growth and represents a tiny fraction of overall sales. What is particularly surprising is the number of tickets for Potter being purchased online by individuals. Mitch Rubenstein, Co-CEO of Boca Raton-based Movietickets.com, told the Times that an average of six tickets are being sold during each online transaction. "We've never seen anything like this," Rubenstein remarked.(Another measure of the adult interest in the film is that Tuesday night's Late Night with David Letterman, featuring an interview with Daniel Radcliffe, the young star of Potter, won the night for Letterman over Jay Leno for the first time since August of last year.)
Daniel Radcliffe Greeted By Near Naked Women
15 November 2001 (WENN)
Lovable actor Daniel Radcliffe has been besieged by scantily clad women ever since he bought Harry Potter to life on the big screen. The 12-year-old star portrays the clever wizard in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone - and his new fame is making him a hit with the ladies. While appearing on American music program TRL, Radcliffe was introduced to a woman dressed in just a towel, who had been waiting for him outside the New York studio. The girl - known only as Candice - had been holding a sign reading, "Nothing is going to come between me and Harry Potter," when TV host Carson Daly brought her up to the studio. She said, "I'm a huge Harry Potter and Daniel Radcliffe fan. I'm so excited."
Harry Potter Stars Vow Not To Let Fame Change Them
14 November 2001 (WENN)
The child stars of the new movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone are enjoying their new-found fame - but are refusing to let all of the attention get to their heads. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are poised for buckets of attention when their anticipated film - predicted to become the biggest movie of all time - goes on international release on Friday. But with all of the fame, and cash, which will come along with their movie star status, the pre-pubescent actors are refusing to let it change them. Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, explains, "I'm never going to think of myself or put emphasis on the fact that I'm famous. I'm just going to know it. I'm not going to talk about it because people who do are often not very nice people." Castmate Emma Watson, who hopes she won't change for the worse either, adds, "I hope my head doesn't get very big. I'm just going to keep my feet on the ground, stick to friends and family and try and lead a normal life." But diminutive redhead Rupert Grint admits he hadn't made plans, like his fellow castmembers, on how to deal with fame. He says, "I've never really thought about it. It's gonna be weird, but cool!"
Warners Got Brit Harry Potter Stars 'On The Cheap'
12 November 2001 (WENN)
Harry Potter studio Warner Brothers has been accused of meanness towards its British stars. Zoe Wanamaker, who plays broomstick-wielding games mistress Madame Hooch in the blockbuster film about a schoolboy wizard, was paid less for her role than for a part in a British TV series. The actress describes her pay as "c*** money", and has even turned down the chance to star in any sequels over the issue. She says, "If they want me for a second, they'll have to up the rates." Reports suggest that 12-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, was initially offered only $97,000 for the first film and $162,000 for subsequent movies - until British actors' union Equity intervened on his behalf. Press conferences at the 15th century mansion where the movie was shot were so well planned that one journalist who wanted to speak to star Richard Harris was told off by staff, despite the veteran actor's apparent willingness to talk.
Potter Star To Get Big Pay Hike
6 November 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Daniel Radcliffe, who landed the title role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, is getting a substantial pay boost following a threat by the British actors' union Equity to boycott future Harry Potter projects unless his payment was increased. According to the London Daily Mirror, he was to have received just $110,000 for the first Potter movie and $182,000 for the second, a figure that Equity described as "paltry." The 12-year-old actor is now due to receive $3 million. "It was a scandal that Dan was being paid so little when the movie is going to be so big," an unnamed insider told the Mirror. "Dan is going to be on the merchandising products that are going to generate untold millions. Him (sic) getting a couple of hundred thousand hardly seemed fair."

2 November 2001 (StudioBriefing)

Warner's acknowledged that Sowerbutts had done some voice work for the film but none of it for Radcliffe.

According to the newspaper, Joe Sowerbutts (sic!) got the job when Radcliffe's voice began to crack before the end of filming. The report indicated Sowerbutts' classmates heard about the vocal problem and suggested their friend because he sounded like Radcliffe.
Potter Star Looking Forward To Fame
30 October 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Daniel Radcliffe, the young actor who was chosen to portray Harry Potter, has told the BBC's Radio Times publication that he is looking forward to fame. "I have thought a lot about being recognized, and I think it will be quite cool," he said. The twelve-year-old, apparently counseled about the capriciousness of fame, added: "I'm just going to enjoy it. After all, I might do this film and then disappear, or something might go horribly wrong and I'll never act again. Or in a couple of years I might have changed so much that I look wrong for the part -- even though Harry grows with the books. So I just want to enjoy it while I can."
Harry Potter's Dreams Come True
9 October 2001 (WENN)
Child star Daniel Radcliffe is struggling to believe he is the most envied boy in the world after being cast as the lead in the Harry Potter films. The young Brit, who has previously appeared in The Tailor Of Panama, was so delighted when he heard he had won the much coveted role he didn't believe it was true. Daniel, 12, says, "My dad answered the phone, and a few minutes later told me I was going to play Harry Potter. We all cried. That night I had to wake my dad to ask him if it was a dream." Harry Potter And The Sorceror's Stone is the first of J.K. Rowling's series of books about the much loved wizard, and the film has made Daniel famous in more ways than one - he succeeded in getting his name mentioned in his school assembly. He remembers, "It was only the third time I've been mentioned in assembly. One was bad and the other was scoring a hat-trick for the B team."
Harry Potter Star Was Nervous

Previously unknown Radcliffe plays the young wizard in the first movie of the series of J.K. Rowling's books, which have millions of fans worldwide. He admits, "The first day on the set, I was very nervous. I was used to rehearsing with about eight other people, and then I got to the set and, including the extras, there were like 150 people there." The brave young actor did many of the stunts in the film himself - and one during a game of Quidditch was his favourite. He adds, "There was one shot where I was hanging one-handed from my broomstick, 22 feet in the air. "I was wired up to the broom, with a huge airbag underneath me, and they moved me around up there. That was pretty cool."

Boorman Worries About Potter Actor
5 April 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Director John Boorman has expressed concern about the psychological well-being of Daniel Radcliffe, the young star of the Harry Potter series. Boorman, who directed Radcliffe in The Tailor of Panama told the online edition of Britain's Empire magazine: "You know, his mother said she'd encouraged him to do our film because she felt he was rather shy and lacking in confidence and the experience would bring him out and that it was a one-off thing. So I was astonished that he was going to spend the next four years or so doing Harry Potter, it's really saying farewell to your childhood isn't it?" Boorman suggested that long after the Potter films are finished, Radcliffe will still have to cope with his celebrity. "What is he going to do when he goes back to school? He's always going to be Harry Potter, I mean what a prospect."

No Trouble With Harry, Warner's Says
22 February 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Warner Bros. has denied British reports that filming of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is drastically behind schedule and that the production could be shut down because of the U.K.'s strict child labor laws. A spokesman for the studio said that it had requested permission for the child actors of the movie to work 20 days more than the original permits had stipulated but insisted that the extension request was "entirely precautionary" and that the production is currently on schedule. A spokesman for star Daniel Radcliffe's school district in London said that the extension would be granted if the boy's school approves of his progress with the tutor on set. "Our real concern is exploitation," the spokesman told today's (Thursday) New York Daily News, adding that in Daniel's case, exploitation did not appear to be a problem. "I hear he's getting a nice wedge of money," the spokesman said.
Authorities May Shut Down Potter Filming
19 February 2001 (StudioBriefing)
Filming of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone could be halted unless Warner Bros. is able to convince British authorities to extend a permit that currently allows the film's star, 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, to work on the film only through the end of March, according to the London Sunday Observer. Bad weather has reportedly forced production delays that could push the closing date of principal photography to July. Under British laws, a child actor may not work more than 5 days a week and must attend school on set. A spokesperson for the local education authority commented: "Although Daniel attends a private school, his application for permission to work must come to us and we must be satisfied that his education is being organized properly. It is our statutory duty to consider this and to worry about exploitation."

Harris completes a stellar cast that includes Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Hart, John Cleese and Harry himself, newcomer Daniel Radcliffe.
Osment Blasts Harry Potter Movie Plans
13 October 2000 (WENN)
Haley Joel Osment has hit out at plans to turn the best-selling Harry Potter books into films. Proving his intellect is as precocious as his acting, the 12- year-old offers a mature critique. He says, "Harry Potter is 70 percent imagination. When the movie comes out, it's going to be such a stereotype for kids. When they think of Harry Potter, they're going to think of what is portrayed on screen." The gifted actor denies he's merely bitter about not landing the role of Harry. Hayley insists he was never in the running for the part, despite reports to the contrary. He insists, "I never wanted to do Harry Potter. I thought it should have stayed as a book. There are some books that should be made into movies and some that shouldn't." Daniel Radcliffe, an unknown 11-year-old British actor, won the role of the young wizard in the film, which is due in cinemas in November 2001.

(1968) and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the role. Now 47 he says, "With so much going for me, you might have thought I could hardly go wrong. But I paid a high price for my instant success. I remember going to parties where the snacks were bowls of marijuana and cocaine." Wild says to Radcliffe, "Steer clear of temptations and keep your feet on the ground."
Presenting Harry
24 August 2000 (StudioBriefing)
The boy who would be Harry met the British press Wednesday at a news conference befitting a royal pretender. The London Daily Telegraph reported that 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who landed the title role in the forthcoming Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was handled "with unusual gentleness for a Hollywood studio" as aides deflected "questions about how much he was being paid and saying that, because of his age, they were anxious for him to be given a light interrogation." However, the London Times reported that Radcliffe spoke "with the confidence of a seasoned Hollywood star who has seen it all before." The young actor told reporters that "I cried and I was just really excited" when he heard that he had been selected for the role. Director Chris Columbus who sat next to him at the news conference, said that he intends to shoot two versions of the film -- one aimed at the U.S. audience, the other, at the British -- and to release the film in Britain under the original title, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Young Harry Not Fully Potterized
24 August 2000 (WENN)
The young star who's landed the role of Harry Potter in the forthcoming film has confessed to not reading all the books. Daniel Radcliffe, 11, of Fulham, London feels a bit embarrassed about landing the part, as his school pals know the character better than him. Timid Daniel, speaking to over 100 reporters and 60 TV cameras at a packed press conference in London yesterday, begins filming the $127 million movie in the autumn. He said, "It's very strange because a lot of the other boys in my class know that I've only read the one or two books - but these boys are total fanatics, they've read all four and stuff. I think they're a bit angry, because I've read the least Harry Potter in my class." Daniel, who will star opposite Dame Maggie Smith in the film, also likened himself a little to fictitious Harry. He added, "I'm a tiny, tiny bit like Harry because I'd like to have an owl!"

Here's The Real Harry Potter
22 August 2000 (StudioBriefing)
The widely published rumor that Gabriel Thomson would star as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone blew up in the faces of those who had instigated it when Warner Bros. announced Monday that another young English actor, Daniel Radcliffe, had been signed for the role. The announcement was a particular embarrassment for Harry Knowles, the operator of the Ain't It Cool News Web site, which first published the rumor about Thomson. "I'm sorry for missing the scoop for y'all, " Knowles wrote on his Web site Monday. "But be releived (sic). Harry Potter (the real one) doesn't where (sic) alleged potleaf hats." In an interview with the BBC Monday, 11-year-old Radcliffe said that he got his first acting job when he persuaded his parents to submit Polaroid photos of him to the BBC when he heard about auditions for a new version of David Copperfield. He said he had previously wanted to try out for a role on an ITV production of Oliver Twist. "My mum and dad never thought it was a very good idea, " he said, but added, "I've always wanted to act since I was five." He got the role. The young actor was also later cast in the John Boorman film The Tailor of Panama, due to be released later this year. "The best thing about filming is going to all the different locations and staying in hotels, " he told the BBC. "They have Sky [satellite television], and I haven't got that at home."
